Aloha, Caroline & Ernie

Caroline Frederiksen - Owner

Caroline is the heart and soul of Kalaheo Steak & Ribs. She grew up in Costa Mesa, Ca. and started waiting tables at just 14 years of age. She was a bar manager for 17 years before moving to Kauai in 1987 and landing a job at the Kiahuna Golf Club Restaurant as a bartender and server. In 1998, she became co-owner of Joe’s on the Green where she remained for twelve years. In 2010, Caroline opened Kalaheo Steak & Ribs with her partner in life and business, Ernie Kanekoa. Caroline is well-known on the island for her generosity, having worked for many charities over the years

Ernie Kanekoa - Owner

Native Hawaiian and of gentle spirit, Ernie was born on the Road to Hana on the island of Maui. Ernie started his career in 1969, at the Sheraton Waikiki in the Security Department, where he quickly rose through the ranks to Executive Assistant Manager. While with Sheraton, Ernie was trained in all aspects of the food and beverage business and worked at well-known establishments including the Safari Steak House, Kon Tiki, and the Ocean Terrace Restaurant and Banquets. Ernie transferred to Kauai in 1985 to assist in the opening of the Sheraton Princeville Hotel and from there worked at some of the best establishments on the island including Dondero’s, The Terrace, The Beach House and Gaylord’s. In 1998, Ernie became general manager of Makahuena at Poipu. Then in 2010, Ernie opened Kalaheo Steak & Ribs with his partner Caroline.
